A historical perspective on the development of the logarithm first and the 'anti-logarithm" second--the exponential--and their uses in a multitude of contexts provides understanding that a simple, concise definition cannot.
Sep 27, 2021 at 23:58 comment added Tom Copeland To 'understand' an elephant to any real depth as opposed to simply identifying it, you need to understand its anatomy, physiology, psychology/behavior, and even evolution within a natural context. Mathematical creatures require similar large investments of time and effort to understand to some substantial depth. To present the divergence of a vector field in terms of an expression of partial derivatives is not an explanation, just a starting point in a long dialogue.
