Sep 29, 2010 at 3:12 comment added user2490 Lakatos, in his article "What does a mathematical proof prove?," among other places, argued for a similiar trichotomy---for him, it was "pre-formal proofs," "formal proofs," and "post-formal proofs." His development of the notion of informal mathematics (a single piece of which may admit many formalizations) may provide a framework for discussing questions like this. (How should one formalize the informal sine function for freshmen? And how should one judge various candidate formalizations?)
