You can also assume $R$ is complete by your second paragraph. By a slicing argument, this ought to imply the case when $S$ has a point over $\mathfrak{m}$ with finite residue field extension (since then $R \to S$ can be refined by a finite flat map by a suitable slice). Perhaps one can reduce to this case by some clever approximation argument? Sorry for the not fully formed argument...
