I am suprised that the paracompactness assumption is needed here, but it makes a lot of sense since in general the covering dimension seems to behave very peculiarly for general open subsets in general spaces. I think one could then build a counterexample of your statement using the compactification of this construction I just found, but I don't know Russian so I might be wrong there. | |
