Jan 31, 2021 at 17:15 comment added LSpice @StevenLandsburg, I was also very impressed by Labesse's generosity in showing me the beautiful routes around Luminy. (That limestone is wonderful.) He can't have got much out of the experience, but he didn't hesitate for a minute when I asked him if he'd like to go out. He even loaned me a pair of his shoes—though they were several sizes too small for me, even by climbing-shoe standards (I think 38 when I usually wear 41)—that pain is one of my main memories of the experience!
Jan 31, 2021 at 12:41 comment added Steven Landsburg @lspice: I had exactly the same experience (at exactly the same place) with Cartier, decades ago.

Jan 30, 2021 at 17:58 comment added LSpice I went rock climbing with Labesse at Luminy a few years ago. I am no great rock climber, but still it was impressive to see how vastly better a climber was this mathematician some decades my senior.
