Aug 31, 2010 at 4:31 comment added Richard Borcherds I recommend using nilpotent groups as an excuse to give up. Otherwise you shortly afterwards run into solvable groups, which are much worse.
Aug 30, 2010 at 17:54 comment added Torsten Ekedahl Another simplifying assumption is that of primitivity, which means that the representation is irreducible and not induced from some proper subgroup. That excludes in one fell swoop all nilpotent groups. There are still a lot of them left however.
