Sep 1, 2021 at 19:04 comment added Paul Taylor My understanding (I think from the collected works edited by Szabo) is that Gentzen was politically naive and only joined the Nazi party because someone told him it would be good for his career. He died of starvation in August 1945 in a Soviet prisoner of war camp - a huge tragedy for logic. (I also understand that several algebraists, students of Noether indeed, were much more enthusiastic Nazis, but survived the war.)
