I love the book, but one of its strength, the number of examples, can get really overwhelming for the total beginner. There is just not enough on the affine case, and the informal, almost conversational style is good for grad students, but not for undergrads. Harris is the ideal second book in Algebraic Geometry (or possibly Eisenbud-Harris is you want to get into schemes.) | |
