Nov 8, 2019 at 20:25 comment added Dave Anderson In topology, with some relaxation on the smoothness hypothesis, a rather simple reference is in Appendix B to Fulton's Young Tableaux. It boils down to basic properties of the Thom class. Apparently this goes back to the very origins of (co)homology, but extracting it from Lefschetz's book is not so easy.
