Aug 4, 2010 at 9:47 comment added Sergei Tropanets @Victor and Others: There are more concrete-non-trivial-interesting-new questions in MO which earned much less points than this one (both for question and answers). Moreover I remember two questions of precisely the same kind one of which was non-community wiki and the other was made so by force. I think MO needs for some more fair and multilevel gradation system. As for references, you may find them in my answer.

As for the "well known" reason, do you have in mind an authoritative discussion of it somewhere? I'd really be interested if you can post references in an answer (but note that E.T.Bell is not considered reliable).
Aug 4, 2010 at 3:43 comment added Sergei Tropanets This should be community wiki. The Kronecker's reason is well known and the question doesn't concerns with research math.
Aug 4, 2010 at 2:55 comment added Gerry Myerson Joe Dauben, in his biography of Cantor, writes, "Kronecker made his legendary remark [about $\pi$] during a lecture to the Berliner Naturforscher-Versammlung in 1886." Dauben cites Weber, Leopold Kronecker, Mathematische Annalen 43 (1893) page 15, and Jahresbericht der Deutschen Mathematiker-Vereinigung 2 (1893) page 19.
