Jul 19, 2019 at 8:57 comment added Victor Protsak Thinking of an orthogonal matrix geometrically in terms of the orthogonal basis formed by its rows immediately convinced me that the conjecture is unreasonable beyond the case $n=2$, where there is too little room. The rest is a matter of perseverance or solid linear algebra technique, depending on one's background.
