Jul 14, 2010 at 21:33 comment added Jason DeVito - on hiatus @EL The statement is not that these occur as fundamental groups of a closed 3-manifold, but that they occur as subgroups of the fundamental group of a closed 3-manifold. The group $Z^2$ is a subgroup of $Z^3 = \pi_1(T^3)$.
