I don't think there's any serious doubt as to its correctness (I've read parts of it in detail myself). I heard that one of the referees objected to a use of the word "generic", which wasn't the standard one in algebraic geometry, and so things dragged a bit and then somehow it never got published. The paper is very well known and admired in the group theory community I believe. | |
