A lot is already understood about the restriction to the hyperelliptic modular group (e.g. the precise image in $\mathrm{Sp}(2g)$), and if you ask a more specific question about this restriction I may be able to answer it. | |

Isn't the characterization of $H_1(S, \mathbb{Q})$ as a representation of $\mathrm{Sp}(2g)$ tautological? As in, we are realizing $\mathrm{Sp}(2g)$ as the group of automorphisms of $H_1(S, \mathbb{Q})$ which preserve the intersection pairing. | |
