As an example (of the theory being a useful conceptual framework), knowing the basic theory and the fact of a certain model category structure helped me breeze through an older paper, just recognizing that the author was verifying all of the basic results that hold in great generality. Ten pages of sometimes tricky argumentation could be summarized quite neatly this way.
