I think that an emphasis on this sort of thing may be partly responsible for the mistaken impression that math is "done" or "dead". That said, certainly "practical math" in the sense of basic numeracy (as others have suggested) is a crucially important skill for a person to have. But I suggest that a willingness to teach this at the university level sends the wrong message to primary and secondary school educators, who, in my opinion, should ultimately be responsible for teaching it. | |
