Oct 30, 2017 at 7:22 comment added Will Sawin @user50948 I don't know how nice and easy it is, but the reduction to the case of curves in this proof of the Grothendieck-Lefschetz fixed point formula should show you what I mean math.stanford.edu/~conrad/Weil2seminar/Notes/L20.pdf The reduction to curves requires $R f_!$, so if we only want the case of the constant sheaf, we still need the case of a general sheaf on curves.

I was wondering if you have a nice and easy example of a statement in etale cohomology where I can explicitly see the Leray spectral sequence argument that you mention? Just something to get me started. Also, thanks for the link to Katz's paper, looks like a great starting point.
