Jun 29, 2011 at 19:25 comment added Pierre The representation ring as an abelian group is $\mathbb{Z}^r$, where $r$ is the number of conjugacy classes; I don't see how it could be isomorphic to $C^r$ where $C$ is a field. And btw tensoring $R(G)$ with a field loses a lot of information.
