The entropy of the distribution of English characters (without space) is approximately $4.14$ bits per character, making the unicity distance for a character stream $\log_2 26! / (\log_2 26 - 4.14) \approx 158$ characters. So one can hope to decipher a cipher text of $158 \times 26$ characters. How much this can be shortened using your ideas is an interesting question. | |
