Sep 4, 2017 at 21:50 comment added Pace Nielsen That's close to what I do. The $\mathbb{Z}$-module $\mathbb{Z}^{m}$ has endomorphism ring $\mathbb{M}_m(\mathbb{Z})$. (That's where the $m\times m$ structure comes from, after picking a basis.) Then you check compatibility of structures, etc...
