Moved copious notes to end of answer, gave 'borders' to translated text, top and bottom. Replaced two of the images by commutative diagram code

Direction of morphism $U^{\mathbf{T}^a}$ in second diagram reversed, to make it match the original article; thanks to a commenter for poininting out. While I was at it, I added page-numbers, and the Zentralblatt-review for the article, to make this answer a more complete reference for future readers

Aug 20, 2017 at 12:08 | comment | added | Arrow | @DavidRoberts understood. I am still hopeful there's a written proof somewhere. Perhaps someone has a copy of the linked paper in my question...
Aug 20, 2017 at 12:05 | comment | added | David Roberts♦ | @Arrow it's a Comptes Rendus paper: an announcement of results. Bénabou has a number of these, and apart from his big bicategories paper, most of his publications are in this format.
Aug 20, 2017 at 12:04 | comment | added | David Roberts♦ | Peter - thanks for this translation, and doubly thanks for the public domain declaration. Regarding the original authors, Bénabou is extremely unlikely to come here and edit this. He has enough reticence to write up his own work presented once in an obscure seminar, despite seeming to want the results to be known; I cannot speak for Roubaud.
