The academic job market, at least in the US, shows no signs of improving. I would suggest at least considering non-academic positions. In my experience, the exact field of the mathematics Ph.D. is less important than attitude and flexibility in considering alternatives.

For specific ideas, SIAM provides a couple of good websites:

Although these tend to focus on the US, I think comparable opportunities exist in the UK as well.
