TeX note: \bf does not take an argument, but applies to all following text in the current group. For both semantic correctness and the behaviour you want, use \mathbf in math mode. For example, compare $\bf{C}^n$ \bf{C}^n to $\mathbf{C}^n$ \mathbf{C}^n (note the exponent). I have edited accordingly.
