Nov 28, 2017 at 20:08 comment added LSpice Not a heuristic, but my least-favourite mannerism in additive groups is the habit of reading '$-x$' as 'negative $x$'. This is at best meaningless (for example, when $x$ is a non-real complex number) and at worst false (students with this habit cannot understand how $|x| = -x$ can be true, since the left-hand side is positive (not necessarily, but that's not the real issue) and the right-hand side is negative …).
