Dec 12, 2016 at 22:44 comment added Fan Zheng This is morally the 7-adic proof in Cassel's spirit. It is neater to prove that for $n=2\pmod 4$, $v_7(x_n)=v_7(n)+1$. Then the result follows from the fact that $7^k$ grows much slower than $(2+\sqrt3)^{7^k}$.
