Sep 12, 2016 at 22:40 comment added Salvatore Siciliano Hi Sven, if $D$ is a field then all Cartan subalgebras of $gl(n,D)$ have dimension $n$ and they are exactly the maximal tori. If $D$ is a skew-field and $n=1$ then the answer is know, as well: the Cartan subalgebras are the separable maximal subfields of $D$... But I do not think it is known what happens in the general case when $D$ is not commutative and $n$ is any positive integer.
