May 15, 2016 at 6:37 comment added naf The idea of the Hodge polynomial is usually credited to Serre but I do not know a reference in print. It has been used long before Kontsevich; it already occurs in the paper "Newton polyhedra and an algorithm for calculating Hodge-Deligne numbers" by Danilov and Khovanskii from 1986.
May 14, 2016 at 19:05 comment added user337830 @Qfwfq: I always think of the subscript $_{hdg}$ as being short for Hodge. Some people get abbreviations by omitting vowels. Still, I never actually read an explanation for it, and I would appreciate it if somebody correct me if that is wrong.
