It has been used long before Kontsevich; it already occurs in the paper "Newton polyhedra and an algorithm for calculating Hodge-Deligne numbers" by Danilov and Khovanskii from 1986. | |

Still, I never actually read an explanation for it, and I would appreciate it if somebody correct me if that is wrong. | |
