Some people need advising, some prefer to work on their own. The goal is to become someone who can mostly work without other's help, but you don't just magically transform into one the moment you graduate. | |

I'd imagine this depends hugely on the student, and perhaps how much background the student needs to know to do research on a specific problem. I'm sure some of the very smart and successful people on this site have some insight and opinions a lot of people will agree with, yet I still feel this is close to purely opinion based. | |
