When you type \mathrm{Ind} and \mathrm{ch} and \mathrm{Td} instead of \operatorname{Ind} etc., then you don't get context-dependent spacing that, for example, makes the horizontal space to the right of $\operatorname{kos}$ larger in $\operatorname{kos}x$ (coded as \operatorname{kos}x ) than in $\operatorname{kos}(x).$ (Positioning of subscripts and superscripts is also affect in some cases.)
