I add algebraic topology tag because of some CW-complex (and topological) interpretations for torsion free groups(as fundamental groups of a cell complex)

Feb 23, 2016 at 15:29 comment added Derek Holt I am not aware of any algorithmic methods for attempting to verify that a group defined by a finite presentation is torsion-free (unless the group can be proved to be nilpotent). I would be interested to learn about it if there are any, even if they only work in restricted circumstances.

Feb 23, 2016 at 14:52 comment added YCor The computation of abelianization is an immediate computation (if I'm correct it's $Z\times Z/11Z$ for the first and $Z\times Z/21Z$ for the second), but I don't think it helps much.
