The student had taken a course in abstract algebra, so one of Shimura's questions was, "State the definition of a subgroup of a group and prove that the intersection of two subgroups is a subgroup." Other professors thought this question was too easy, but the student could not solve it. The question was indeed a good discriminator. | |
