Apr 28, 2022 at 0:03 comment added Timothy Chow In Goro Shimura's memoir The Map of My Life, he says that he was once tasked with devising an ad hoc exam for a student who wanted to transfer to Osaka University. The student had taken a course in abstract algebra, so one of Shimura's questions was, "State the definition of a subgroup of a group and prove that the intersection of two subgroups is a subgroup." Other professors thought this question was too easy, but the student could not solve it. The question was indeed a good discriminator.
