Apr 30, 2010 at 1:02 comment added Erick Knight That seems to work. Another way of seeing that dh(M) <= dh(N/M)-1 is to show that Ext^1(M,-) = 0, which follows from Mayer-Vietoris applied to 0 -> M -> N -> M/N -> 0. That generalizes for higher dimensions too. Thanks for parsing this proof.
