For instance, if $1 < p < 2$, under you hypothesis, one can obtain $\|x+y\| \le \sqrt{5-p}$ which is clearly $< 2$; see e.g., web.math.princeton.edu/~naor/homepage%20files/inequality.pdf also, "Hanner's inequality" is a good keyword I think | |
