Indeed when I posted this question, in the Related column to the right a question about Dyck paths has appeared. The answer given there by Ira Gessel seems to say something similar to what you are saying, and using it the author of the question arrived at a closed form for the gf. I will look most carefully into what combining your and their considerations may give here.
