If $\sigma$ is the nontrivial automorphism $x \mapsto x^{-1}$ of $\mathbb{G}_m$, then the semidirect product $\mathbb{G}_m \rtimes \langle \sigma \rangle$ seems to be a counterexample. (Groups of multiplicative type are abelian.) | |
