Apr 21, 2010 at 1:51 comment added Andy Putman Well, Bers's proof of Thurston's theorem doesn't exactly use the compactification (though it certainly is implicit), and I personally prefer Bers's approach. But I agree with your larger point that understanding Thurston's compactification of Teichmuller space is the key to understanding many phenomena in low-dimensional geometry/topology.
