Mar 22, 2015 at 16:44 comment added YCor You can obtain all finite abelian $p$-groups $A$: indeed embed $A$ in the center $Z$ of a 2-generated $p$-group $G$ and consider the fibered product of $G$ with itself over $Z$. Then its quotient by the diagonal of $G$ in $G\times G$ is isomorphic to the quotient of $Z\times Z$ by its diagonal and hence admits $A$ as a quotient.
