Mar 12, 2015 at 11:46 comment added Derek Holt Many, and probably most, journals have the possibility of submitting additional material associated with papers, which is not part of the published (hard-copy) paper, but is available electronically to subscribers of the journal on the journal website. So that would be another option for the Appendix in your Option 2.
