The spectral sequence comes from taking an increasing filtration of $EG$, and this gives an inverse tower of ring spectra; the higher lines come from elements which go to zero when you restrict to smaller and smaller skeleta of $EG$.
Jan 5, 2015 at 15:46 comment added Craig Westerland Fantastic, thanks! But does the first argument really work? Don't we have that the square of class on the 1-line lies on the 2-line, modulo elements coming from below the 2-line? Or have I got the direction of my filtration backwards?
