I originally said that asking about remainders of locally compact spaces becomes much less interesting. This was pointed out as not necessarily correct by Todd Trimble, so I reworded it to say that the question was "more tractable".

I can't think of a particular reason off hand, outside of the fact that compactness is a nice property, that would make it much less interesting. I was mainly going off of my notes from Arhangle'skii's talk, and he didn't seem particularly interested in the case of locally compact spaces. Thanks for the input, I'll edit my question accordingly.
Dec 14, 2014 at 3:10 | comment | added | Todd Trimble | Why does the question become much less interesting for locally compact spaces? I understand that compactness then becomes a necessary condition on the remainder, but I see no reason it would also be sufficient; I'd imagine characterizing remainders even in this case would be nontrivial.
