It just makes it more cumbersome to look up an equation which has been referred to by number. Furthermore, in electronic files equation numbers are usually hyperlinked to the actual equation, so displaying of numbers is primarily for (1) if one is reading a printed copy of the paper, or (2) so equations can be referred to by number in other papers. | |
