Mar 20, 2014 at 21:56 comment added maomao yes. However, the improvement given by GH from MO does use values, doesn't it? So for the current formulation, the improvement does not hold, I think. Anyway, it is a very simple problem, and for some reason I thought the Erdos-Szekeres theorem can be applied here, but did not see exactly how. This was the main purpose of my question. Thanks.
Mar 20, 2014 at 21:39 comment added Alex Degtyarev @maomao Since the problem is purely combinatorial, it doesn't really matter what the values are. Or, if you prefer, you can add them with weights.
