Nov 27, 2013 at 22:18 comment added Mark Wildon Thanks! I should have mentioned that the identity I used is (1.40) in Gould's tables: math.wvu.edu/~gould/Vol.4.PDF. The identity is equivalent to your form of Kummer's theorem (put $x=2a+1$), and in fact the proof also carries over (evaluate at $a=0,1,\ldots,n$).
