Feb 6, 2010 at 22:06 comment added John Stillwell According to Bell, Legendre and Cauchy were asked to referee Abel's manuscript (on Abel's theorem) in 1826. They stalled, with the excuse that manuscript was not legible, and eventually Cauchy mislaid it. It was not published until 1841.
