I don't think my writeup of Zolotarev's proof is the best -- the details would be much more transparent with a picture or two. The proof I wrote was part of a larger experiment -- if you click on the Theorem tab, you can see other theorems/axioms, etc.. that QR logically relies on. You can then trace those back further and further, and get all the way to the axioms of set theory! There's (more than) a few gaps, but hey.. it's an experiment.

Oct 20, 2009 at 17:07 comment added Alon Amit Interesting proof! Thanks! :) Conceptually it's very attractive (define three natural permutations, calculate their sign), but the calculations are a bit tedious. Still, nice proof - don't think I've ever seen it.
