Jul 3, 2013 at 8:52 comment added user22882 I do not believe this is an answer to the question. There is a well-accepted concept of computation, namely as "that what a Turing machine does". The other examples you name have been shown to be equivalent to a Turing machine by ordinary, definition-based proofs. If you had an example where people computed with Turing machines etc. instead of reasoning about them, then this would be more in spirit of the question.
