Jan 19, 2010 at 13:09 comment added Kevin Buzzard One I see commonly in my area is when $G$ is the absolute Galois group of a global field (for example a number field) and the subgroups are the absolute Galois groups of the completions of the field (these are subgroups of $G$). In many instances local-global principles do not hold, and their failure is measured by a "class group" or "Tate-Schaferevich group".
