Dec 8, 2016 at 3:34 | comment | added | Ben Webster♦ | By way, this is very late, but one thing to consider about the characteristic poly definition: this is really saying that you should look at matrices whose minimal polynomial is $x^n$; that's quite different from being nilpotent, as considering the 1 x 1 matrix with a nilpotent entry shows. You were getting confused because you were getting nilpotence from the ring, and nilpotence from the matrix mixed up with each other (which is understandable, since most people think about matrices over fields, and so only have to think about the latter). | |
