Sep 25, 2012 at 11:59 comment added Joseph O'Rourke @Aaron: Reassuring that the simulations all agree!
Sep 25, 2012 at 4:18 comment added Aaron Golden @Joseph: Yes if I modify my version to avoid counting null moves I see the same mean move counts as you for the 4x4 (4 rooks) and 8x8 (8 rooks) case.
Sep 24, 2012 at 20:51 comment added Joseph O'Rourke @Aaron: Now I altered my data to count only moves that actually move, so again our data is out of synch.:-) But I do think we are in accord in spirit now, even if not in the counting details.

Correcting a bug in my implementation, updating the move count averages and distribution plot, noting agreement (now) with Joseph O'Rourke's implementation.

Updating the distribution, noting difference between my results and Joseph O'Rourke's results.

One more edit to add more trials and get a better look at the distribution, also shift the graph so the flat line at less than the minimum number of moves possible is visible.
Sep 23, 2012 at 20:21 comment added Per Alexandersson I got very similar graphs as well for the distribution of the number of moves needed. I used the same algorithm; sometimes, a move is not an actual move.

Corrected bug in program that caused initial rooks to not fill the board, updating distribution, adding mean.
