Oct 16, 2012 at 12:58 comment added user9072 @vzn: wouldn't asking about an off-topic comment in particular three weeks after it was made be off-topic, too? ;D Yet, what I mainly wanted to express (and this was a meta-commment, and you may call it off-topic if you like) is that just because a great text can be written as an answer to a question does not imply that the question was any good. I could also have expressed this with a different (or no) analogy, so there is nothing highly specific to firefighting. Yet, one could say that this and other nice texts (to some extent) helped to calm a heated discussion, so it seemed fitting.
Sep 29, 2012 at 0:52 comment added vzn wrt @quids comment, what does any of this have to do with firefighting? sounds off topic to me.... & imho the proof attack, even if eventually proven to be erroneous or with a gap, is what can nevertheless be regarded as somewhat heroic....

Sep 9, 2012 at 1:27 comment added David Roberts Dear Minyong, it has been stated by experts, here on MO and elsewhere, that universes are not necessary for the uses to which EGA/SGA are put. Indeed Colin McLarty has shown that ZFC is far stronger than is necessary, with the results provable in some higher order version of arithmetic. As far as the interuniversal aspect of IUTT goes, I expect it to have a topos-theoretic interpretation. This to my mind makes switching between models of set theory cleaner i.e. functorial.

Sep 8, 2012 at 13:18 comment added user9072 @Olivier: while I agree with your comment regarding the answer, I would like to add that your inference regarding this particular question to me comes close to saying: the great and heroic work of the fire-fighters prove that it was worth setting the house on fire.
